This weekend we took the girls to the Kansas City Jiggle Jam, a two-day festival of kids' music (that's music for kids, not music by kids). We were excited to go this year because one of our favorite kid rock bands, The Jimmies, performed. Even better, a few days before the concert Ashley, the lead singer and mastermind behind The Jimmies, posted on Twitter that she had some tickets to Jiggle Jam and wondered whether anyone in the area would like them. I replied, and she sent them to us! Further proof that The Jimmies are an awesome band. :)

Sick of annoying kid music? Then you need The Jimmies... I am in love with The Jimmies. Even if my kids are not as in love with the Jimmies as I am, I don’t care*....Their videos are genuinely hip. Kinda like old school MTV for those who remember it back in the day. It’s indie for the kindie.

*Note: My kids are crazy in love with the Jimmies. As a testament to how cool they are, my 13 year old daughter pried her eyeballs off the back of her skull (where they seemed permanently embedded due to eye rolling) and pronounced the group cool. She asked to watch the video again. That’s … unprecedented. I also think I caught her humming “Bedhead”.

Watch enough kids’ videos, and you’ll figure out pretty quickly that even though kindie rock is a booming genre, even its most popular artists tend to have more enthusiasm than money....so you wouldn’t expect their debut DVD to be much to write home about, both because the band doesn’t have a huge backlog of material and because they haven’t been around long enough to build an audience the size of, say, They Might Be Giants. But the DVD, Trying Funny Stuff, is a wonderful surprise — emphasis on the “wonderful.”

The 2-disc DVD/CD set "Trying Funny Stuff" is an ideal Christmas present for any kids you would like to see laugh and giggle and singing along. They will enjoy the music but also the great videos full of silly stuff from The Jimmies and the sing-a-long karaoke. I have not had the pleasure of seeing the Jimmies perform live, and this DVD is the next best thing....The real gem on this DVD to me is the behind the scenes "documentary" about the making of the music videos. It is an in-depth and humorous look at the hard work the Jimmies and Slavens put into each of their videos. In a 2 minute music video it's easy to miss all the time that went into lighting hundreds of candles to emulate firelight, making a dress out of cotton balls, or constructing a set out of candy!

Seriously, the best thing about The Jimmies is that I don’t just tolerate them, I love them. The songs are real songs, not dumbed-down hokey nursery rhymes. We can sing together, and we both enjoy it… unlike some other kids’ “bands”. Not to mention the videos are wonderfully done: whimsical, magical, downright beautiful. Absolutely fantastic and wonderfully geeky. Yes, there is learning here, too. Even in Spanish. The kiddo’s favorite: “Taddy”. My favorite: “Cool to be Uncool”.

I’m totally in love with the kid-friendly CD, Make Your Own Someday, by The Jimmies. I know it’s supposed to be music for the kiddos, but it is so fun, I pop in the disc for my own pleasure, too. The songs are totally random (which I love), creative and not cheesy at all. Yay! These musicians are super professional at their trade.

The upbeat tunes on this rocking album will quickly become favorites of your child. I wouldn't doubt it if this group ends up on a cartoon, or popular kids channel as an "in between" act.

As soon as I played Make Your Own Someday for the kids, they immediately started bopping in the back seat. As the CD progressed, they erupted into giggles listening to The Jimmies sing about using your 'wrunkle' when you sneeze and 'doing the elephant'. The rhymes are super cute, and fit perfectly with their style of music.

The Jimmies are a delight live. Ashley's antics, props and humorous lyrics are a treat to witness and hear for both young kids and their young at heart parents. The highlight of the set was a romp through the 80's with a flashback melody of Billy Idol, Madonna, A-Ha and others. The band was tight.

The latest band that we're rocking out to is the Jimmies. They are literally an indie rock band for kids, the brain child of Ashley Albert. I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley at an event a few months ago and was amazed when she told me that she wasn't a mom but just a kid music singer. When I asked her why she chose kids' music, she smiled, like a little kid, and simply said, "because I'm a kid at heart."

If its not talk about the recession, its the Swine Flu. I don't know whether to be irritated or amused, to be honest. "Well, the best way to prevent it is to wash your hands" or "Sneeze into your sleeve".

I mean, with all the hype about it, that is the best they can come up with? My kids are 3 and 5 and can manage that much. (We call it "Doing the Elephant", thanks to a nifty song by the Jimmies, by the way. Check it out - its catchy!)

When I got to school and my son jumped in the car, he noticed what was playing, and I told him about The Jimmies. I expected to hear something about "baby music," since now that he is hooked on Guitar Hero, he is off Radio Disney and into classic rock. Instead, he said "These guys are good!" Wow! If you knew my son, that's quite an endorsement.

Anyway, he loved The Jimmies, I loved The Jimmies, my five-year-old niece loved The Jimmies, and I think you and your kids will love The Jimmies too!

When Mama’s little ones weren’t running in and out of the concert hall (because she believes she has the most hyperactive boys EVER), they were mesmerized by lead singer, Ashley’s, AMAZING voice and the band’s infectious energy on stage. It was so fun to see children as small as 1 to as old as 5 or 6 clapping, shaking, and just really getting into the show. Mama believes that had this been individual family living rooms, the adults would’ve been shaking their stuff up there as well and a few did, including Mama.

Everything from helping Soaper The Scaredy-Bot to not feel scared, to learning Dan’s (drummer) dance moves, to enjoying the unforgettable 80’s hits towards the end, makes a concert from The Jimmies a MUST NOT MISS family event.

The Jimmies rocked the 92YTribeca on Sunday! 92YTribeca is an arts and entertainment venue located on 200 Husdon Street, NYC, and The Jimmies were performing part of 92YTribeca’s B.Y.O.K. series.

My kids (who are 6, 7 and almost 9 years old) were pretty much double the age of the other kids in the audience, but The Jimmies isn’t just for tots, their songs are a collection of different music styles, from reggae to rap and from country to pop, and I can almost guarantee even every parent can pick a song they like to listen (even when the kids are not around).

I found it gratifying to hear a variety of musical styles — Latin, pop, rock, and even “rap-ish” — so perfectly fit to clever lyrics. The composer, Ashley Albert, reaches out to the silly side of grade-school kids’ humor, while presenting topics such as individuality, having good hygiene, thinking of others, and not being unnecessarily afraid. ...the BEST part of this album is that it’s not your typical kiddie songs. The songs are catchy and don’t make you want to gouge your eyes out when your kid wants to hear the same song over and over and over. Led by singer/songwriter Ashley Albert, the Jimmies released one of 2007's best children's music albums. The songs are beautifully produced and mostly entertaining, and the Jimmies skate easily through several genres a la the Backyardigans -- one minute Albert tries a Jamaican patois (on "Huptsha Huptsha"), the next she's emulating Chicago blues. Little listeners definitely won't get bored with this one.

The NY based band has released their debut CD Make Your Own Someday - Silly Songs for the Shorter Set and it’s a HUGE hit with my family and every kid who has been around when it’s been blasting the speakers. Even my husband loves it, primarily because the band members obviously have a wicked sense of humour and love what they’re doing. The lyrics are hilarious and yet totally kid/family appropriate. They’re a little above my two year old’s head but he loves it regardless. We all do. Get yours at GimmeJimmies or CD Baby - listen for the hidden track about boogers. You’ll laugh your butt off.

We've been listening to this fun album for about 2 weeks non-stop, everywhere we go. Not a meal passes without a little rendition of "Peanut Butter Polka" being sung by Nadia, or OK, I admit, sometimes myself. For the record, I'm partial to bananas and honey. Nadia prefers sprinkles (or jimmies?)and red hots! No, I'm not making that up! My favorite songs? Besides the "Peanut Butter Polka, " I love Bedhead. It's straight out of the 80s with the feel of the Violent Femmes, Belinda Carlisle and The Bangles all wrapped up into one fun little song about hair.
